Artifacts

Reflect
The artifacts, Guided Reading Lesson Plan and ESL How-To Essay, exemplify Standard 6 by demonstrating my ability to use communication effectively in a classroom setting. The Guided Reading Lesson Plan is a lesson plan for a group of 4 students. In a conversation facilitated by me, the students read a book at the instructional level. Before this is possible, it is my job to prepare them by walking them through the book. A book walk includes, looking through the pictures, predicting, and getting familiar with unusual language. This process uses verbal, nonverbal, collaboration, intuition, and effective use of questions to provoke higher order thinking. The ESL How-To Essay is an essay I have prepared exemplifies my understanding of the process of second-language acquisition and the teaching and learning challenges the ESL student and the teacher may have. It also provides some effective strategies to use to overcome these challenges to meet learning goals. It stresses literacy, peer-to-peer interaction. It also shows awareness social and communicative struggles as a result of being from a different culture language. The Essay demonstrates ways in which I would make my classroom a more inviting and safe place to communicate freely. Communication is the cornerstone of learning.

Project
The artifacts, Guided Reading Lesson Plan and ESL How-To Essay, demonstrate who I am becoming as a teacher by exemplifying my sensitivity the communicative needs of individual students. They provide specific examples of how and what I can do to make learning experiences better for English language learning students, or struggling readers. These artifacts have helped shape my philosophy by, once again, helping to realize the importance of peer-to-peer interaction and learning through doing. The Guided Reading Lesson Plan is something that, as I have practiced, I am becoming quite proficient in. This lesson I have constructed is based on a leveled-book that I will be able to use in my classroom. After I had created it on my own, the instructor allowed us to look at the purchased lesson plans that came with the book and, when compared, were very similar. This was very encouraging and inspired me to keep practicing. This experience gave me confidence to know that I can create a guided reading lesson plan, through my own means, that teaches the same concepts as the professionally created lesson plan, what a save of money!
